Talk and presentation by Tanja Hollander, Auburn, Maine.

Do Facebook friends count as friends? When a friendship begins or ends with a click, what kind of relationship is this? Tanja Hollander had 626 Facebook friends in 2011 and she asked herself: “Am I really friends with all these people?” She became interested in the intersection of art, photography, social media and global travel both virtually and in real life and set out to visit every single person that Facebook called her friends.
Her project is an ongoing effort (so far she has visited over 250 people) to create a portrait of every single friend in their homes all over the world.

At the d.a.i. Tanja Hollander will show a selection of the portraits and will also discuss the sociology of the Internet that this project explores. Tanja Hollander, born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1972, holds a B.A. in photography, film, and feminist studies from Hampshire College.

“Are you really my friend” will debut in its entirety at MASSACHUSETTS MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART in 2017 and was featured in NEON magazine (Stern). Hollander has lectured extensively about the project, also at the Facebook Head Quarters, CA.
