Distempers of Decline: The Identity Pandemic at Empire’s End

Beschreibung
Lecture with Prof. Stuart Ward, University of Copenhagen. The Australian historian Stuart Ward invites you on a journey to Australia, Canada and New Zealand with his opening lecture for the “End of Empire” conference. The conference itself looks at changes that followed Britain's withdrawal from its empire after the Second World War. Among other countries, these changes affected the far-flung settler colonies of Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Ward shows that Britain's dwindling role as a world power led to crises in all three countries. Especially in the 1960s, new concepts of identity had to be established in order for the countries to position themselves in a post-colonial world. Australia, Canada and New Zealand thus created new self-descriptions to compensate for the loss of the British motherland and to define their own national self-images.
