Lecture with Prof. Graeme Davison, Monash University Melbourne. Empire Day Bonfires, Boy Scouts, and Queen Elisabeth II’s visit in 1954 - the Australian historian Graeme Davison relives the atmosphere of the 1950s in a personal lecture. His childhood memories between the British Empire and the Australian continent illustrate the intertwining of British and Australian identities after the Second World War, and he describes the increasing dissolution of the British Empire in the age of decolonization from the perspective of “Down Under”. His personal biography provides insight into the bonds that faraway Australia felt with the Empire and into the search for what is actually typically “Australian”.
