Talk with Jessica Strain, d.a.i. Tübingen.
For centuries, immigrants have arrived in the US from all corners of the world looking for the American Dream. In recent years this myth has undergone a transformation that no longer solely focuses on the traditional ‘white picket fence’ values but also incorporates the globalization of western American ideals.
The focus of this lecture will be how the American Dream has changed, and whether illegal immigrants have a right to this dream. Within this lecture the struggle for the American Dream will be examined: both from a middle class American standpoint and from an illegal immigrant’s perspective. Another focus will be the key questions raised in the book The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle such as: Does the US have a responsibility to those less fortunate? And how should the US borders be controlled?
Come and join Jessica Strain, native American and Englisch teacher at the d.a.i., for a lively discussion of these controversial issues.
