Talk with Tricia Rose, Brown University in Providence, RI.
Hip Hop is in crisis. For the past dozen years, the most commercially successful Hip Hop has become increasingly saturated with caricatures of %u201Cblack gangstas%u201D, %u201Cthugs%u201D and %u201Cpimps%u201D. At the same time, Hip Hop has become a primary means by which we talk about race in the United States.
In this talk, scholar and cultural critic Tricia Rose explores the most crucial issues on each side of the polarized debate: Does Hip Hop cause violence, or merely reflect a violent ghetto culture? Is Hip Hop sexist, or are its critics simply anti-sex? Does the portrayal of black culture in Hip Hop undermine black advancement?
Tricia Rose is a Professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University in Providence
