Tehila Lieberman will visit Tuebingen to read from her prize-winning short story collection Venus in the Afternoon. The winner of the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in short fiction, Tehila Lieberman's rich debut collection of stories conjures wildly disparate worlds.
Whether plumbing the darker depths of human emotion or casting a humorous eye on a doomed relationship, these stories never force a choice between tragedy and redemption. Instead, they invite us into the private moments and crucibles of lives that are as hungry and flawed as our own.
Originally from New York, Tehila Lieberman lived in Jerusalem before settling in
Cambridge, MA. Her short fiction often explores Jewish characters and subjects, including themes about the intersection of the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds.
There will be a Q&A after the reading when Tehila Lieberman will discuss her writing process, how she gets inspiration for stories, writing from experience, and more.
“A bountiful, confident book. Tehila Lieberman trusts her readers to discover that these carefully wrought stories about love, loss, illness, betrayal, all the stuff of life – are also about destiny, and the impossibility of avoiding your fate,” says Edith Pearlman, winner of the 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction.
