Fast food giant McDonald’s has 480 restaurants in Brazil, 192 in Argentina, 180 in Venezuela, 97 in Colombia, 55 in Chile, 20 in Peru, 19 in Ecuador and Uruguay, and 7 in Paraguay. But, in Bolivia, the eight restaurants located in the cities of La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz had to be closed in 2002, after only five years of operation. Why? The company cited financial problems but the real reasons were to be found elsewhere. Bolivia may be a small, poor nation on the global market, but a country's fierce local food culture can sometimes be a factor more powerful than economic clout. In this era of globalized food production, which we now realize has affected our health and environment – and has caused many to rethink how they eat, Bolivia’s relationship with food is an interesting case study.
In his first feature-length documentary, Fernando Martinez shows what happened. It is a story driven by the characters behind the big events, their life stories, and, above all, chefs – gourmet chefs as well as everyday cooks. The symbolism is obvious when a multinational giant is brought to its knees by a country's traditions and heritage.
